When SMAL Technology Excels

The Nanoro Microscope, equipped with SMAL technology, is the ideal choice for researchers and engineers who need a niche imaging tool capable of addressing limitations faced by traditional systems:
-
No vacuum environment required
-
No immersion medium needed
-
No staining or labeling necessary
-
Non-contact, non-destructive imaging
-
Real-time and true-colour results
-
Minimal sample preparation
-
No complex post-processing
These features make Nanoro especially valuable for scientists working with delicate, unmodified samples or in environments where conventional imaging technologies fall short.

Advantages and Limitations of SMAL Technology:

At LIG Nanowise, our SMAL (Super-resolution Microsphere Amplifying Lens) technology offers a unique, non-destructive approach to optical nanoscopy—providing real-time, full-colour imaging at resolutions far beyond the diffraction limit. However, like all microscopy techniques, SMAL has certain application-specific limitations that should be considered.
Current Limitations
-
Short working distance: The ultra-short working distance of the SMAL lens prohibits the use of cover slips and requires direct access to the sample surface.
-
Surface coatings: Samples coated with resins or polymers cannot be imaged, as these materials block the microsphere’s access to the actual surface structure.
-
Material hardness: The microspheres are made of barium titanate (Mohs hardness ≈ 6). Contact with harder materials may result in permanent scratches or damage to the microsphere—an inherent risk due to the minimal distance between lens and sample.
-
Incompatible with UV light: The SMAL system is not designed for use with ultraviolet illumination, due to material and optical constraints.
Despite these boundaries, SMAL remains a powerful and highly specialized imaging solution for specific scientific and industrial challenges.
